  abstract      = {This paper discusses an object database approach to the implementation of an On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) server using an example of an insurance company. The approach takes advantage of the check-out capability of object databases to bring data aggregates to the desktop of executives and managers for production of OLAP reports. The OLAP database is a middleware solution capable of accessing data from a full range of relational databases and legacy systems. Functionally, our solution resembles the "star schema" approach to OLAP but provides superior, more flexible and efficient reporting capabilities. This is achieved through the "object chain structure" which stores data facts (measurements and some pre-calculated aggregates) in individual objects connected by object identifiers and directly accessible from OLAP programs. This allows decision makers to conduct multidimensional analysis from many different angles without the penalty of join operations.}
