  abstract      = {Data mining and knowledge discovery (DM&KD), until recently, has been largely an academic field of research. However, the tendency to turn data into information - met currently in large corporations - has forced the application of this technology in various branches of business, mainly for banking and finance, retail and marketing, telecommunication, and healthcare. In this paper, central issues to data mining and knowledge discovery will be briefly presented and discussed, giving an insight into recent progress in DM&KD. Giving the necessary background for three fundamental approaches (classification studies, clustering studies, and visualization studies), some general features of the data mining process and its basic steps will be dealt with, assigning particular attention to the problem of data visualization.}
